HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Holyoke Fire Department shares tips to help prevent a dryer fire after firefighters put one out Monday night.

Crews sent to two car crash at intersection in Holyoke

Crews were called at around 8:15 p.m. to a reported fire at 20 Easthampton Road in Holyoke. Upon arrival, smoke could be seen coming from the basement in one of the units. The fire was under control within minutes and it was determined to be caused by a clothes dryer.

No injuries were reported.

Clean the lint filter after each use to prevent lint buildup. Lint can reduce airflow and create a flammable fuel source.

Clean the vents outside twice a year, or more often if your clothes take longer than normal to dry. You can also have a dryer lint removal service.

Use the right duct: Replace any plastic or foil accordion-style ducts with a rigid metal duct.

Don’t overload the dryer.

Don’t dry flammable materials: Don’t dry materials that are contaminated with flammable or combustible liquids or hazardous materials.

Stay home: Stay home when the dryer is in use. If you must leave, turn off the dryer.

Remove combustibles and keep at least 3’ clearance around it

Have working smoke alarms: Make sure your home has working smoke alarms.

Have a family escape plan: Practice a family escape plan with family members, and make sure everyone knows how to call for help
