United Tractors Taps into EV Battery Raw Materials Project

PT United Tractors Tbk (UNTR) explores opportunities on nickel smelter business, producing raw materials for electric vehicle batteries. The investment value of this project is expected to reach billions of US dollars.

"We are currently studying nickel projects to manufacture battery raw materials. One crucial aspect before commencing the project is to ensure the availability of limonite nickel," United Tractors' Investor Relations spokesperson Ari Setiawan said, recently.

Ari emphasized the need for United Tractors to construct a smelter employing high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) technology to produce raw materials for electric vehicle batteries. However, the company must conduct a thorough analysis of this project due to its significant investment requirements.

"Currently, we are operating a smelter that utilizes rotary kiln electric furnace (RKEF) technology to produce nickel pig iron (NPI), which serves as a raw material for stainless steel," he said.
